The Attic

Get your loved one's stories on record, in their own voice, while you can.

You pick the questions. They answer by video, by voice or in writing, on a laptop, an iPad or a phone. Your family keeps every word, privately, for good.

Someone asked you to tell your stories?

You don't have to set anything up. Use the email address they sent the invitation to — no password needed if you'd rather we email you a link — and your first question will be waiting. Answer it whenever you're ready.

Answer your first question

How it works

Most people answer their first question in about five minutes.

  1. Step 1

    Pick the questions

Hundreds are written to get people talking — childhood, work, love, the hard years. Or write your own.

  2. Step 2

They answer in their own time

By video, by voice or in writing. They can stop halfway through and pick it up another day.

  3. Step 3

    Your family keeps it

Every answer lands in a private family library. Send one on a birthday years from now, or keep them all for later.

The question sits right under the camera.

So when they read it, they're looking at you — not down at a screen. It works the same way on a laptop, an iPad and a phone, so nobody has to learn it twice.

“A man we loved died too soon. His stories, his voice, his humour — gone. Not because no one cared. Because no one thought to ask in time.”
Why The Attic exists

Private to your family

Every recording starts out private. Only the people you choose can watch it — and it can only be opened to anyone with the link if you choose that yourself. Every recording says who can see it, right beside it.

Delivered when it matters

Save a message for an 18th birthday or a wedding day, and it arrives on that date.

Yours to take with you

Download everything, any time. Nothing is ever deleted without warning you — and your family — well ahead.

How we keep your stories safe

What you record here may be the only copy there is. We look after it that way.

  • Recordings are private by default, and stored where only the people you allow can open them.
  • A recording stays on your device until we’ve confirmed it’s safely saved.
  • Nothing is deleted while anyone might still come for it.
  • Before anything is passed on after a death, a person here checks it — and contacts you first.

Free to start. $5.99 a year when you need more room.

2 GB free for good — about 45 minutes of video. Keepsake gives one person 15 GB, about 5½ hours, and the Family plan covers up to six adults with children free.

Questions families ask

Does Dad need a smartphone?

No. He can record on a laptop in a web browser, with nothing to install. An iPad or an iPhone will work too once the app is out.

Will he have to remember a password?

He signs in once on his own computer and stays signed in. If he ever forgets it, “Forgot your password?” sends a link by email.

Who can see the recordings?

Only the people you choose. Every recording starts private. You can share it with your family, send it to one person on a date you pick, or — only if you choose to — let anyone with the link watch it. You can change it for any recording, at any time.

How long does an answer take?

As long as he likes. There’s no timer — two minutes or twenty — and he can stop and finish another day.

What does it cost?

It’s free to start, with room for about 45 minutes of video. When you need more, plans start at $5.99 a year, and every paid plan unlocks everything.

What happens if The Attic closes?

You’d hear from us at least 90 days before, by email, with a link to download everything — and so would the trusted contacts you’ve named, in case your inbox is quiet. You don’t have to wait for that, either: you can download everything you’ve recorded any time.
